Close League Game @ Bordeaux V Mansle
Mansle CC arrived in force at Bordeaux Giscours for the last league match of this year, in part thanks to our scorer, Virginie, who drove part of the team in a minibus.
Coach Mike quickly got the team out in the field to practise throwing and to warm up and our team were pretty smart in whites, whilst Bordeaux were wearing black T shirts.
Captain Rémi won the toss and decided to bat. As expected, Bordeaux's opening bowlers were pretty fierce and life was difficult for our batters – Usman playing his first game for our club unlucky to hit his first ball uppishly straight to a fielder! The dot balls added up, but Robin doggedly kept in, trying to see off the first pair, who generously contributed a quantity of no-balls and wides to keep our score ticking over. The main part of our total was scored by Rémi and Jason, making 65 between them with two smashing sixes to note in three balls from Jason, before they were removed by Lukman Safi.
Our total of 113 off 34 overs seemed a bit on the light side, as was the tea due to a cock-up on the old catering front (Reginald Perrin reference for the aged British reader...), covered by Clinton's valiant efforts to feed the hordes and the usual generous donation of rosé and red wine from the Chateau Giscours sponsors.
Nothing daunted, our team took the field full of confidence in our bowling, which was seconded by our snappy fielding and a general sense of team spirit which was visible from the boundary. Rémi bowled economically, Rehman amazingly fast, Zeeshan determinedly, Rubesh aggressively.... and seven wickets tumbled. Robin, Usman and Bilal took amazing catches, Ben nearly took a superhuman one, and Jason kept wicket imperiously. However, the slight total proved just that, and Bordeaux managed to get over the line, though failing to get the desired runs within 20 overs.
The team performance proved that our victory over Catus was not a one-off, and the coach underlined that next season, if we continue to improve at this rate, we will be a force to be reckoned with.
Well done all!
